Chapter 20

“Hello?” Dad answered on the first ring.

I wanted to say that I called my dad in a fit of desperation. But it wasn't quite that.

I wanted to think that I could have, should have, been flying high on getting Andre matched. Little victories, that sort of thing.

But I wasn't.

Instead I was feeling frustrated, overwhelmed and a little guilty.

“This is impossible,” I said, seated on my bed with my laptop open in front of me and a notepad filled with the ramblings of a madwoman next to me.

“Excuse me?”

“This is impossible,” I repeated, just in case he actually didn’t hear me and he wasn’t playing stupid. But I knew that wasn’t the case. Dad always heard everything. “And what’s more, I think you knew it was impossible.”

“Emma, I don’t know how many times I have to tell you this, but I’m not a mindreader. What are you talking about?”

“Do you have any idea of the day I’ve had?” I asked him.

“Well, I spent the entire morning and most of the afternoon trying to organize, or maybe wrangle is a better word, two different children’s birthday parties all so two single parents could connect over apple juice and half eaten birthday cake.”

That stopped me. “Wait, what?”

“I thought we were talking about the kind of day we’ve had. Is that not what we’re doing?”

I gave a frustrated little growl. “No, Dad, that’s not what we’re doing. I have been going out of my mind today. I’ve got that stupid article that I feel like everyone in the city has read. I’ve got Fiona’s friend pushing me to fix up her brother. And then I’ve got Fiona about to reconnect with her horrible ex-boyfriend. And on top of all that, I’ve got Sam and Judy. This couple I’m supposed to fix before my court date tomorrow afternoon. I can’t do it. It’s not possible and you know it.”

Dad didn’t seem fazed at all. “Of course it’s possible. If it wasn’t possible we wouldn’t be able to do it.”

“Yeah, well, I’m having a hard time feeling like anything’s possible when I can’t even help my best friend,” I said.

“Don’t worry about Fiona,” he said.

“That’s easy for you to say,” I said. “You’re not the one with the front row seat to the disaster that is Fiona and Conrad. Dad, she flat out asked me. She asked me why I don’t have a match for her and I didn’t have an answer. Why don’t I have an answer?”

“Because you don’t.”

“That makes no sense. At all.” I sighed. “I have no idea what I’m doing here.”

“Of course you don’t,” Dad said. “That’s why I’ve still got the job. Stop thinking like you’re going to wake up one day and just understand everything.”

“That’s not a thing that’s going to happen?”

“It’s not.”

“Well, that’s very disappointing.”

“Prepare to be even more disappointed because it never happened for me, either.”

I flopped back on my bed. “Thanks so much, Dad. That is exactly what I needed to hear right now.”

“Do me a favor,” Dad said.
